The world of translationVarious disciplines are studied with the aim of equipping students to become professional translators, including technical, legal, multimedia (localisation), financial, medical and pharmaceutical translation; translation revision; writing skills; seminars on working as a translator; and computer-aided translation (CAT).

Research skills and general culture
These are an essential element of ESTRI courses. They are covered in specific classes given both in foreign languages and French and include the history of translation (course given by the UNESCO chair) and the study of specialist medical, pharmaceutical, technical, legal, financial and IT texts.

Familiarisation with foreign cultures and the workplace
Placements are an integral part of the course. Their aim is not only to improve students' language skills but also to increase their cultural and intercultural awareness and encourage personal development. A six-month work placement abroad during the fourth year and a three-month end-of-course internship during fifth year give students the time to realise that their own way of life is not shared by throughout the world and to become thoroughly familiar with other cultures and the workings of companies, international organisations and local authorities. Placement co-ordinators support students when arranging their internships in order to make sure their career objectives are met.
Objectives :
The main target competencies are:
- Faithfully translating a text from the source language into the target language
- Knowledge of translation specialisms: financial, technical, legal, IT, etc.
- Documentary research skills
- Building a network of specialists who can provide the background information necessary for translation
- Managing clients (translation buyers) and keeping deadlines
- Translating texts in the student's areas of specialism from at least two foreign languages using translation techniques:
- Translating legal documents (e.g. judgements, certificates, notarised documents, contracts and articles of association)
- Translating technical documents (e.g. manuals, patents and datasheets)
- Translating medical and pharmaceutical documents (e.g. patient information sheets)
- Translating electronic documents and documents relating to information and communications technology (e.g. software, websites and computer games)
- Building and managing relations with translation buyers and translators
- Handling one or all of the stages in the translation process
- Consecutive and liaison interpreting from at least two working languages
- Using IT tools such as the internet, word processing, spreadsheets, data processing software and computer-aided translation (CAT)
